‘Twas the week before Star Wars, and all through the cinemas, there is not a lot stirring this weekend while Disney Accountants and Studio Heads stand poised to start patting themselves on the back as the cash from that Galaxy Far, Far away starts rolling in like a tsunami.
In the meantime, Warner Bros. unveils Ron Howard’s new film In The Heart of the Sea nationwide. Based on an event from 1820 when a whaling ship is preyed upon by a giant whale (and inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick), the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Cilian Murphy and Brendan Gleeson. Advance word on this has not been stellar, and the box office projections aren’t promising as most pundits are predicting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 to stay atop the heap in its third weekend of release. May the odds be ever in your favor indeed.
Legend starring Tom Hardy as twin London mobster Kray Brothers widens its release following a limited bow last weekend. Directed by Brian Helgeland (A Knight’s Tale, 42), the film is distributed by Universal.
There are a few limited offerings at the specialty box office this weekend. The Big Short about a group of people that after predicting the housing bubble burst that caused the great recession take on the big banks, opens on a handful of screens from Paramount in advance of its wide release on December 23. The films has an impressive cast that includes Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei, Steve Carrell, Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Ryan Gosling.
Jessica Biel top-lines Bleeding Heart from Gravitas Ventures while Sam Rockwell, Amy Ryan, Will Forte and Danny McBride star in Don Verdean which had its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Rounding out the limited releases are The Girl in the Book from Freestyle releasing as well as the animated film The Boy And the World from GKids.
