BINGE WATCH OF THE WEEK: Mr. Robot

This week’s binge watch is Mr. Robot. With the season finale airing Wednesday August 26th on USA, you have just enough time this weekend to squeeze in the full season of twists and turns. This highly stylized show is beautifully shot, expertly written, and phenomenally acted by Rami Malek, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, and Martin Wallstrom. Oh, and don’t forget Christian Slater thrown in there for good measure.

Mr. Robot is a tale told by the very unreliable narrator, Elliot (Malek). You, as the audience, are his imaginary friend that he talks to as he journeys through New York City as a hacker with a desire to take down corporate America. I tend to hate on anything with tons of voiceover, but this show is different because he is so unreliable. The voiceover is something the audience needs to figure out and unravel – it isn’t about being spoon-fed information.

The first season of this cleverly crafted show almost feels like a superhero origin story for its lead, Elliot. He is the antihero with horrible social anxiety who uses his hacking ability to attack sexual predators, but also to snoop on his friends and even therapist. His hacking catches the eye of another hacker, Mr. Robot (Slater), who invites him to join his collective (think Anonymous) trying to start a revolution by taking down corporate America.

Mr. Robot is a summer offering with a more serious and grim story. But, the writing and acting certainly make it worth the watch, plus it has been renewed for a second season. All nine episodes are currently available On Demand and on usanetwork.com/mrrobot.
