The first panel in Hall H for Comic-Con 2015 is from Open Road, we were treated to Bill Murray’s first trip to San Diego Comic-Con. He entered in Robert Downey, JR style through the crowd and in character as rock manager Richie Lanz to “Smoke on the Water.” The whole panel he seemed to have a great time playing with the audience and telling jokes. Honestly, I could spend all day listening to Bill Murray tell stories.
“Rock the Kasbah” is the new collaboration between Bill Murray and Mitch Glazer, who was also on the panel. They first collaborated on “Scrooged.” Directed by Barry Levinson, Rock the Kasbah is about a rock manager who takes his last client to Afghanistan to perform. It has a star packed cast including Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, and Bruce Willis. It is based partially on Afghan Star the Afghan version of American Idol. Filmed in Morocco during Ramadan, Bill Murray said he rented a party bus with disco lights for the cast.
When asked how they collaborate on scripts, Mitch said he writes and Bill rewrites. Bill said the key is to not ask for writing credit. They did admit to some improv on set, but since Mitch has worked so closely with Bill for so many years that he writes easily in Bill’s voice. Mitch said the key to getting Bill to be in your movie is to include singing, because Bill loves to sing. Both he and Zooey Deschanel sing in this movie. They even got some Yusuf Islam songs for the film.
I’m going to end on a couple interesting anecdotes from Bill Murray.
He found out while filming this movie that Bruce Willis was a page at SNL while he was in the cast. Bruce said Bill and Gilda were the only ones nice to him.
He recently worked with Miley Cyrus and said, “Miley Cyrus is really fucking good and can really sing. I don’t want anymore bad rapping of Miley Cyrus.”
Bill was asked his favorite role he said, “Once upon a time I did save the city of New York and I had the coolest damn car to drive around in.”
Lastly, he was asked if the stories of him doing crazy things to people and saying no one will ever believe you were true. He responded by saying he had no idea what they were talking about. Ha!
