After a year absence of Doctor Who at Comic Con, BBC America brought back the British show with Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor. This is Peter Capaldi’s first SDCC experience. He seemed moved by the outpouring of love from the American fans. Rounding out the panel was Jenna Coleman, Michelle Gomez who plays Missy, and showrunner Steven Moffat. The panel was hosted by Comic-Con favorite, Chris Hardwick. We also got a season premiere date, September 23rd!
*SEASON 9 TRAILER SPOILERS* They showed the trailer for the new season. It was dark and definitely had the feel of a scary movie. Missy was featured prominently while the Doctor spoke of evil. We see a shot of Missy as the Doctor says he wants to kiss it to death. The favorite moment for most of Hall H was the at the end of the trailer Maisie Williams’ character was revealed and she says, “What took you so long, old man.” We don’t know much about her character, but she definitely has a previous relationship with the Doctor which seems very interesting. *END OF TRAILER SPOILERS*
As Capaldi’s first Comic-Con, he talked about his love of the Whovian fandom. He said how wonderful it was to see people who love a show he has loved since the age of 6. This was clear as he came by the Hall H line to visit with fans that were sleeping out. He said it was such a great moment to get to be cast in Doctor Who since it is “in his bones.” Moffat spoke about how much he likes Capaldi’s Doctor saying, “He’s Scottish so he’s automatically better.”
This was also Michelle Gomez’s first Comic-Con appearance as Missy. She said its the easiest job in the world because it’s all in the writing. They spoke about the Doctor’s complicated relationship with Missy (aka The Master). Moffat said they were great friends but it is a friendship between a vegetarian and a hunter. Gomez says, “We both kill a lot of people. He feels bad about it, I don’t.” Capaldi just said she distresses him.
It seems Jenna Coleman is very happy with her place on the TARDIS and didn’t seem to be making a move to leave any time soon. She said the Doctor and her have finally found their groove and this coming season she really teaches him how to be human.
Overall, the coming season looks as if it will be focusing on the Doctor’s relationship with Missy and from the trailer seems to have a darker tone.
